History and Culture

Tewantin originally began life as a timber town. In 1869, it was the river port for the Noosa area. In 1871 Clarendon Stuart surveyed a town site for the Tewantin settlement. Tewantin was a thriving small town with a reliance on the gold, fishing and timber industries.

The Kabi Kabi (local aboriginal tribe) name for Tewantin was Woolumba, meaning place of big water.

Tewantin has retained much of the history of this area while still progressing with the times. The village has kept a strong country town community atmosphere with all services and facilities provided.
